Meta Introduces New Security Tools to Protect WhatsApp and Messenger Users from Scams

Meta has announced a new wave of security features for WhatsApp and Messenger designed to help users protect themselves from scams and secure their accounts. These updates include AI-powered scam detection, improved privacy alerts, and proactive defenses against fraudulent activity across Meta’s messaging platforms.

AI-Based Scam Detection in Messenger

Meta has begun testing a new advanced scam detection system in Messenger. This tool monitors new conversations and alerts users if a newly contacted person might be attempting a scam. Users will also have the option to submit recent messages for AI-driven scam analysis, allowing for a quick credibility check.

If potential fraudulent activity is detected, the system will warn the user and provide a list of recommended safety actions such as blocking or reporting the sender. Meta stated:

“When a potential scam is detected, users will be shown information about common scams and given the option to block or report the suspicious account.”

The feature is enabled by default, but users who wish to turn it off can do so through Privacy and Security Settings under the Scam Detection option.

New WhatsApp Warnings and Safety Features

WhatsApp is also receiving a set of new updates aimed at protecting users during video calls and group interactions. When starting a video call with someone you don’t know, WhatsApp will now warn you to share your screen only with trusted contacts.

Meta explained:

“Scammers often try to convince people to share their screens, allowing them to steal sensitive information like bank details or verification codes. With this new feature, we’re providing users with more context to detect and prevent scams.”

Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a ‘Safety Overview’ card that appears when a user is added to a group chat by unknown people. This overview includes information such as the group’s creation date, member count, possible scam indicators, and detailed steps on how to control who can add you to groups.

WhatsApp will also notify users when someone outside their contact list calls them, providing extra context about the caller to help users make safer decisions.

8 Million Scam-Linked Accounts Disabled

Meta reported that since the beginning of the year, it has disabled around 8 million accounts linked to scam operations across Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines.
The company also removed over 21,000 pages and accounts impersonating customer support representatives in an attempt to trick users into sharing sensitive information.

Meta and OpenAI Crack Down on Criminal Scam Networks

Earlier this year, Meta partnered with OpenAI to dismantle a large-scale criminal scam operation in Cambodia. The network was involved in a variety of fraudulent activities — from selling fake likes and pyramid rental schemes to convincing victims to invest in cryptocurrency scams.

Through these new initiatives, Meta is reinforcing its commitment to user safety and digital integrity. The integration of AI-driven scam detection and enhanced transparency tools marks a significant step toward a safer, more trustworthy messaging environment.
